The Dean’s Investment Group (DIG) is UC Santa Barbara’s leading student-run investment organization, offering undergraduates direct exposure to financial markets, equity research, and portfolio management. Sponsored by the Dean of Social Sciences, DIG bridges the gap between academic learning and real-world investing through active management of a live portfolio and fundamental company analysis. DIG operates through a team-based structure, with analysts assigned to industry-focused groups such as Technology, Healthcare, and Consumer Goods. Each team conducts in-depth research on public companies, creates detailed investment memos, and presents formal stock pitches to the group. Investment decisions are made collectively, with an emphasis on long-only strategies rooted in value and growth-at-a-reasonable-price principles, while remaining responsive to evolving market conditions and macroeconomic trends. Regular meetings provide members the opportunity to pitch new ideas, analyze current holdings, and evaluate overall portfolio performance. Students gain practical experience using professional tools and valuation techniques, including discounted cash flow (DCF) modeling, comparable company analysis, and financial statement interpretation. Beyond investment work, DIG cultivates a collaborative, intellectually driven environment where members build both technical and soft skills necessary for successful careers in finance. DIG alumni have secured competitive roles in investment banking, private equity, asset management, and consulting at top firms including Goldman Sachs, Blackstone, and Morgan Stanley. The group also hosts guest speakers, networking events, and workshops that connect students with UCSB alumni and industry professionals, further enriching the educational experience. Through these initiatives, DIG plays a pivotal role in preparing students for careers in finance and promoting financial literacy across campus.
