About Taylor Marshall
My name is Taylor Marshall, and I am a Senior Honors Elementary Education major at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. I am majoring in Community Education and Social Change, where I take coursework in Social Justice and the current education system. I have recently been admitted to UMass Amherst\'s Elementary Education 4+1 Accelerated Master\'s Program where I will become certified to teach grades 1-6 and prepare to take my passion for helping children to foster young minds. I am currently taking graudate level courses in the education field to gain more insight into teaching and will begin officially student teaching next year. I am also pursuing a Minor in Psychology where I am taking coursework to better understand the mind of the children and adolescents I hope to educate in the future. Being a summer camp counselor since I was 13 has given me a strong passion for working with children and inspired me to work in the field of education. I want to make my future classroom a safe, inclusive, and welcoming place for all students where they can see their own potential. Having shadowed different teachers at my local elementary school, I am so excited to work in the school system one day and have seen what it looks like. Additionally, my experience as a tutor for Teach for America has made me an experienced creator of lesson plans and an experienced builder of relationships with students. My employers would describe me as driven, passionate, genuine, and adaptable. I am looking for internships and part-time jobs that allow me to work with children in an educational setting and develop skills in classroom instruction, inclusion, and differentiation.
Experience
Ignite Tutoring Fellow
Sep 2023 — Present
As an Ignite Fellow, I am responsible for providing high-quality tutoring for a group of 1-4 3rd Grade Students in reading. I have been grateful for training in helping students reach educational milestones and training in evidence-based instructional strategies. Each week, I turn a pre-made curriculum into daily engaging lessons and slideshows where I give explicit instruction on emergent literacy and reading comprehension. This semester, I am focusing on teaching reading comprehension such as the different parts of a story as well as emergent fluency. During each lesson, I focus on building relationships with my students and fostering a sense of belonging by including daily check-ins, brain breaks, would you rathers, and incorporating my students interests into every lesson. Every lesson also includes scaffolding, direct instruction, modeling, and guided practice. I pride myself on giving my students chances to reflect on their learning, showcase it in different ways, and giving them wait time to process difficult ideas and questions.
