   Statement of Purpose:On June 2, 2019, my life was forever changed when my son, Miles, a bright, happy, talented, 23-year-old unarmed Black man, was shot and killed by police blocks from our home while experiencing a mental health crisis. That tragic day marked not only the end to my son’s life, but it also marked the beginning of my life’s mission: to fight for the protection and dignity of families who, like mine, have been failed by a broken and biased system.Since that day, we have dedicated ourselves to dismantling the systemic failures that stigmatize and criminalize mental illness, especially for communities of color. Our goal goes beyond raising awareness—we aim to drive tangible change by identifying and targeting the critical points in the system where we can apply pressure and prevent future harm.My work and this movement are empowered and sustained by hundreds of volunteers, advocates, and allies in California and across the country. We have forged strong partnerships with other impacted families, mental health professionals, racial justice advocates, and forward-thinking government officials. Together, we are committed to transformative change at the intersection of mental health, racial justice, and community-led reform.
