ABOUT TASFIA AHSAN
I am an early career professional with a background in natural heritage and animal welfare, and experience in environmental planning. Previously, I completed my Master of Environmental Science at the University of Toronto Scarborough. As a graduate student, I (1) produced and successfully defended a graduate thesis for research on recovery strategy antagonisms under Dr. Nicholas E. Mandrak;(2) further developed my knowledge of conservation issues, biodiversity, protected areas, scientific literacy, conservation policy, and environmental legislation in Canada; and (3) developed technical skills in ArcGIS, QGIS, statistical programming with R and python, and multivariate analyses. I am also a graduate of the Faculty of Land and Food Systems from the University of British Columbia, where I completed my Bachelor of Science in Applied Animal Biology. At UBC, my academic focus addressed a variety of different challenges and perspectives globally in relation to environmental impacts, individual species influences on the environment, and animal-environmental conservation efforts. I have also had the opportunity to examine environmental issues associated with fisheries and industrialization, ethics associated with human impacts in the environment and local ecosystems, and human conservation effort impacts on animal welfare and behaviour. I am professionally focused on supplementing my existing experiences and education in order to strengthen my awareness of environmental concerns regarding animals and conservation, as well as to determine how I can most effectively contribute to addressing these challenges. Additionally, I am personally focused and have a demonstrated history of maintaining active participation in the non-profit sector and philosophy industry, including the founding and running of a national non-profit known as ECHO Canada; other roles I have undertaken include public educator for the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society, as well as policy researcher, outreach team member, and communications team member for the Society for Humane Science. These roles have provided invaluable experience in the non-profit sector that allows me to bring a unique perspective professionally, through the lens of issues that need to be addressed in the non-profit sector, as well as in the greater community.
