About TasaraTasara Creative Weaving Centre, located in the serene coastal village of Beypore, Kozhikode, Kerala, is a pioneering space dedicated to the exploration and celebration of textile art, hand weaving, and creative exchange.Established in 1989 by the late Vasudevan, the late Shantha, and Balakrishnan, Tasara (meaning weaving frame in Sanskrit) was envisioned as a bridge between traditional craftsmanship and contemporary art practice. From its very beginning, Tasara has been a space where creativity and community come together, rooted in the belief that handcraft is both an artistic and spiritual pursuit.Over the past three decades, Tasara has evolved into a vibrant international hub where artists, designers, and craftspeople from all over the globe gather to experiment, collaborate, and learn. It offers a rare environment where the rhythm of handloom weaving, the texture of natural fibers, and the essence of Kerala’s coastal culture inspire new creative expressions.At the heart of Tasara lies a deep respect for sustainability and handmade processes. The centre promotes natural dyeing, eco-friendly materials, and slow, mindful making. Its studios—equipped with handlooms, dyeing units, and open spaces—invite participants to explore the intersections of textile, art, and life.Tasara is not just a place to learn techniques; it is a living space for artistic dialogue. Artists-in-residence and participants work side by side, share meals, and exchange ideas in an atmosphere that nurtures both solitude and collaboration.The Tasara International Retreat on Art & Textile, held annually, brings together creators from diverse disciplines—textile artists, painters, sculptors, designers, photographers, educators, architects, and engineers—for an immersive, month-long journey of learning, sharing, and co-creation.Over the years, Tasara’s workshops and residencies have welcomed participants from all over the world, fostering a strong global network of creative practitioners who continue to carry forward the spirit of Tasara.
