ABOUT TANYA SORRELL

With doctoral training is in rural and urban underserved Mental Health and Substance use services research, and a minor in Complementary and Integrative Behavioral Health practices for Latino groups, I am well versed in the clinical and research needs of the Latino Community. I developed and taught a graduate nursing/medical course in Cultural Competence in Psychiatric assessment, diagnosis, and treatment, and provided course content/lectures to other students in mental health and cultural competency. This led to state and national accolades as she served on national SAMHSA committees for Cultural Competence in Nursing Care. My PI experience with PCORI and SAMHSA grants increased cultural utilization of mental health services with minorities and cultural training for providers. Recently directing a $3 million state-wide Colorado Legislative funded Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) Services Program project that has served over 2250 clients with substance use treatment in 22 rural Colorado counties has led to my current role. I’m now the Director of the Illinois SUD- Center of Excellence and on the Illinois Substance Use Advisory Council developing similar programs for SUD access, care and outcomes improvements in Illinois. My publication record reflects translational research interests in increasing behavioral health care and services utilization using cultural based approaches to improve the overall behavioral health/substance outcomes of rural/urban under-served populations. I am a licensed and board certified Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner who specializes in child, adolescent, and adult psychiatric medication provision. In my practice, I recognize that everyone\'s situation is unique and I make a holistic effort to understand all aspects of a customer\'s life in order to: •Reach an accurate diagnosis •Deliver highly personalized psychiatric medication treatment that maximizes one\'s chances of recovery using integrative mental health practices. •Work towards NOT just the elimination of psychiatric symptoms, but on achieving a full enriching life of activity and contribution in an overall plan of mental health and wellness I have worked in the field of mental health for over 25 years, in the Yuma area for more than 10 years, in Colorado more than 5 years, and now in urban Chicago. During that time, I\'ve treated thousands of mental health customers with many different diagnoses and problems.
