ABOUT TANAY NAGAR
As a CS + Philosophy major at UW-Madison, I am passionate about exploring the ethical and social implications of artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML) in various domains, especially healthcare. I have developed skills in various technological niches, and have applied them to various projects and internships related to AI/ML, such as predicting commodity prices, creating home automation models, and designing digital marketing campaigns. Currently, I am leading a team of seven members as an Undergraduate Research Scholar at WiSOR (Wisconsin Surgical Outcomes Research Program), where we are investigating gender and ethnicity-based biases in letters of recommendation for surgical residency applicants. We are using Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC) to create a dictionary of differentiated words, and a bag-of-words classification model with multiple classifiers to reveal the subtle cues that result in applicant bias. Our goal is to develop a tool that can help reduce discrimination and increase diversity in the surgical field.
