About Tamara Stawicki
I am an experienced biomedical researcher interested in harnessing the power of genetics…
Experience
Assistant Professor of Neuroscience
Jul 2017 — Present
My lab focuses on using genetics plus cell and molecular biology techniques to uncover how sensory hair cells function and the mechanisms behind toxin-induced sensory hair cell death. In my time here I have: • Designed and oversaw the development of a new laboratory space and zebrafish facility while managing grant and startup funds requiring budget management skills. • Developed the scientific and communication skills of 24 undergraduate student researchers requiring management and training skills. 8 of these students were coauthors on lab manuscripts, and 6 presented at scientific conferences. • Balanced teaching 5 classes per year with running a successful research lab that has 4 publications to date. • Reviewed grant applications for college-funded grants. • Developed a novel assay looking at cadmium-induced hair cell death and used this assay to investigate how cadmium enters hair cells and the mechanisms of cadmium-induced cell death resulting in 2 publications. • Utilized DNA cloning and transgenesis to generate three new transgenic lines to analyze cell signaling pathway activity in vivo. • Performed RNA sequencing to identify mutated genes in a mutant line identified through genetic screening. • Utilized communication skills to teach neuroscience to a broad audience having taught intro, upper level and laboratory based neuroscience courses to both neuroscience majors and nonmajors.
