ABOUT TAMARA ALLEN-MUHAMMAD
As a young girl, I remember sitting in my room surrounded by dolls and stuffed animals, teaching them whatever came to mind. It didn’t matter what the lesson was—only that I was teaching. That innocent moment marked the beginning of a lifelong dream of becoming an educator. Teaching felt as natural as breathing. I have always loved gathering information and, just as deeply, sharing it with others. I became a teacher because I believe knowledge is meant to be passed on.To me, teaching is an exchange of information and ideas that can take many forms. For more than 20 years, I’ve had the privilege of exploring a variety of teaching methods and styles. As I’ve grown as an educator, I’ve found that a responsive approach is the most effective. Being attuned to the needs of my students allows me to create a learning environment that is safe, rigorous, and enjoyable. I strive to connect with students in ways that support their social, emotional, and academic growth while ensuring they feel valued and secure in the classroom.I believe it is my responsibility to equip students with the skills they need to succeed beyond school. Of course, I teach reading, writing, and arithmetic, but I also focus on helping students become thoughtful, productive members of their communities. Lifelong learning skills—such as active listening, perseverance, and striving for one’s personal best—are woven into my teaching each day. When students learn to listen actively and truly understand information, they are better prepared to apply their knowledge, put forth effort, and grow into confident, capable lifelong learners.
