About Taehwan Kim
Senior undergraduate at the University of Pennsylvania, studying a major in Bioengineering with minors in Chemistry and Psychology. I am a research assistant in 1) the Cereda Lab at Mass General Brigham, where I am developing functional imaging techniques to improve clinical detection and treatment of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and 2) the Meaney Lab at Penn Bioengineering, where I am studying the effect of subconcussive preconditioning on complex head injury outcomes. I am a highly motivated, team-orientated, and vigilant student with high career aspirations. My current focus is in seeking mentorship, establishing dialogue with medical professionals, and contributing to translational research which carries real-world significance to build the tools required to explore my own interests in the future. My future goal is to study a medicine postgraduate, with an eventual interest in working as a physician-scientist. I believe that developing the ability to save lives and empower patients on their journey to better health is a truly fulfilling and worthwhile mission, and I hope to serve others and become a leader in my community through my work. Through my undergraduate coursework, I am seeking to (1) understand the modern intersection of technology and medicine in clinical settings (2) investigate the scientific process behind modern health technologies, treatments, and drugs, and (3) acknowledge the technological, medical, and ethical issues that underlies their use in a clinical environment.

Research assistant for the research team of Dr. David Meaney, Senior Associate Dean for University of Pennsylvania Department of Bioengineering, whose lab is striving to understand the heterogeneity of traumatic brain injury (TBI) outcomes by examining how the state of the brain before injury, or preconditioning, predict concussion risk and the likelihood of full recoveryDelivering repeated subconcussive head impacts prior to concussive impact is increasingly suggested to have a preconditioning effect in mice models, improving cognitive outcomes to the point where the preconditioned mouse is functionally identical to the uninjured mouse. However, there is no established biomarker signature for outcomes following complex head impact to either confirm the injury or to guide its treatment, which could be incredibly informative for contacts sports and return-to-play protocols. My current research is to identify signature patterns of cytokines associated with different categories of TBI pathology using fluorescent bead-based ELISA techniques.
