Over the past eight years, I have designed and taught a dynamic graduate-level course at Claremont Graduate University that has served more than 100 Master’s students preparing for careers in arts and nonprofit leadership. The curriculum integrates real-world case studies, role-playing simulations, and strategic frameworks to deepen student understanding of philanthropy, executive nonprofit leadership, board engagement, institutional and individual fundraising, budgeting, and long-term planning. Many of my students have gone on to lead development efforts at major arts organizations, and the course has become a core offering within CGU’s Arts Management program, known for equipping students with both the technical skills and creative thinking needed to thrive in a rapidly shifting philanthropic landscape.
