ABOUT SYDNEY GALLUP

Accepting that humans change constantly and learning that your career path doesn’t have to be linear has helped me to trust in the growth I’ve experienced over the last few years. ‘Cause like, how did I go from wanting to open my own bakery, to enrolling in a business program, to wishing I could do something with my art abilities, to having a marketing professor who collects Oreo packaging from around the world, to graduating and working with preschoolers, to graduating from a counselor education grad program, to thinking I could be a school counselor, to pushing away higher education, to landing a job school counseling but also teaching elementary students, to sliding into admissions so I could try out higher education and get as far away from teaching as I could, to being a TRIO counselor, to finding a career coaching position working with art & design students that is ALSO paired with handling the marketing for that career center and is turning out to be a way for me to use both my bachelor and master degrees while also allowing me to express my creative side fully? And let me just say, creating marketing initiatives and social media content to show off our career center has been a challenge and a joy. It’s not always cool to follow your university’s career center on instagram, but I like to make it cool (or is it just actually corny- you decide). I should have known my excitement for the marketing courses within my business major meant something. I shouldn’t have believed that using my artistic abilities within my career was impossible. All of this allows me to still work with students too and I use my voice to talk about issues that are important to me. Addressing things related to my queer identity, understanding identities different from my own, and breaking down professionalism are at the forefront for me, right now. And I’m loving where I am at in life; I have balance and I’m finally nurturing “little syd”.
