ABOUT SVEN PETERSON

I provide leadership and advice to companies operating in a world that is increasingly volatile, unpredictable, complex, and ambiguous, enabling them to navigate a dynamic legal, regulatory, social and technological environment characterized by complex and often conflicting rules, regulations and customer expectations. In this environment, I help companies to understand and prepare for new and emerging risks strategically, working closely with business leaders, and federal and state regulators, to develop and enable the adoption of business strategies and technology while meeting legal, regulatory and ethical obligations and while preserving a strong reputation with customers, regulators and other interested/impacted parties. I currently serve as Vice President of Compliance, Ethics and Regulatory Services, and Corporate Compliance & Ethics Officer at Premera Blue Cross, ensuring the overall effectiveness of Premera’s Compliance & Ethics Programs and leading regulatory strategy. At Premera, I co-founded the Data and Artificial Ethics Committee, which was established to ensure that Premera uses data and AI responsibly, in accordance with all ethical, legal and regulatory requirements. I serve as a board member of the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association Data and Technology Oversight Subcommittee and am a member of the Office of the Insurance Commissioner AI Advisory Board.In addition to my work at Premera, I serve on the advisory boards of the Center for Business Ethics at Seattle University’s Albers School of Business and Economics, and the Seattle University Online Cybersecurity Leadership Program. I teach Ethical Leadership in the MBA program at the University of Washington Foster School of Business. I am also the Chair of the Board of Mwanzo, a charity that operates a school, health clinic, agricultural and economic empowerment programs in Rabuor Village, Kenya. Prior to joining Premera, I was an attorney focusing on health care law with the U.S. Dept. of Health & Human Services in Washington, D.C, and in private practice at Foster Pepper (now Foster Garvey) in Seattle. I received my J.D. from the Columbia University School of Law, where I was a Harlan Fiske Stone scholar, my Ph.D. in philosophy, focused on ethics, from Georgetown University, and graduated magna cum laude from Seattle University, where I was a member of the Alpha Sigma Nu honor society and Psi Chi.
