ABOUT SUSIANA MELANIE

I am a PhD candidate in Materials Science and Engineering at Imperial College London, with a strong passion for biomaterials and sustainable innovations. My doctoral research focuses on extracting β-chitosan from squid pens using ionic liquids and integrating it with bioactive glass to produce functional nanofibres via electrospinning — aimed at biomedical and environmental applications.Alongside my PhD, I serve as a researcher at the National Research and Innovation Agency of Indonesia (BRIN), where I’ve built a solid background in marine-derived biomaterials, particularly seaweed, microalgae, fish protein, and sea cucumber collagen. I bring hands-on experience in biopolymer development, materials characterisation, marine natural product extraction, and biotechnology. With a Master’s degree in Advanced Chemical Engineering from The University of Manchester — where I developed biopolymer (PHBV) from Haloferax mediterranei — I combine multidisciplinary scientific training with practical lab and fieldwork, including scientific diving and teamwork in cross-functional, international research settings. Both my postgraduate studies are funded by the prestigious Indonesia Endowment Fund for Education (LPDP).I am open to research, R&D, and innovation roles in biomaterials, marine biotechnology, or sustainable materials — and welcome collaborations bridging science and impact.
