ABOUT SUSAN JOHNSTON
Setting the dinner table. Curling up in a chair to read a book. Tucking your children into bed. The moments that make up a life revolve around furniture — yet furniture is a luxury not all individuals or families have. Especially those transitioning out of homelessness. Motivated to help her community, and seeing immense value in keeping furniture and household items out of landfills, Susan Johnston had a vision to build a non-profit dedicated to collecting used furniture and other household items and providing them at no cost to individuals and families transitioning from experiencing homelessness into their own homes. After a wildly successful pilot program, the Central Furniture Rescue is now a 501 C3 and supported more than 227 households in its inaugural year. As the executive director of the new non-profit, Susan works diligently to build the organization\'s foundation for success. From assembling the board of directors and organizing volunteer teams, to raising funds and building alliances with businesses and community organizations, she is instrumental in raising awareness of Central Furniture Rescue. Leaning on her 25-plus years of experience in operations and project management, Susan took an idea, implemented it, and now is focused on scaling this program with the goal of helping as many individuals and families as possible turn places to live into homes.
