About Susan Bernfield

As founder and artistic director/producer of New Georges, Susan Bernfield has produced more than 100 new works, multiple theater projects, and countless works in progress by adventurous playwrights and directors (who are women+), establishing a boundary-pushing aesthetic based in exuberant theatricality and structural innovation, and launching the careers of artists who now permeate every corner of our culture. She is also a playwright whose work has been presented or developed at theaters nationwide. Susan serves as President on the boards of ART/New York and the National Theatre Conference, on the board of The Assembly and the advisory board of The Drama League’s Beatrice Terry Residency, was a founding board member of The Indie Theater Fund (now IndieSpace), and is a member of the National Theatre Conference and League of Professional Theatre Women. She is the recipient of Obie and Lilly awards.

We serve the largest ongoing working network of women+ theater artists in New York City with a diverse slate of programs, our indispensable workspace, The Room, and the cultivation of an artistic community and the collaborations that rise within it. Honors for New Georges, its plays and its people include 3 Obie Awards, The Lilly Award, the National Theatre Conference Outstanding Theatre Award, the Susan Smith Blackburn and Kesselring Prizes.
