ABOUT SURJ BAINS

I was born in Birmingham, England, and grew up in Coventry. My journey has been shaped by a love for technology, problem-solving, and collaboration both inside and outside work.Currently, I’m focused on Platform Engineering where I am one of the Leads within the Data Platforms at NewDay My work involves designing and implementing strategies to streamline deployments and ensure Git remains the single source of truth. I specialise in using tools like ArgoCD and Crossplane to provision and manage cloud infrastructure and Kubernetes resources across multi-cluster and multi-account environments.I’m experienced in creating scalable CI/CD workflows using GitHub Actions, enabling teams to automate testing, linting, versioning, and security checks. From bootstrapping Kubernetes clusters to managing secrets with External Secrets Operator, I strive to build robust, secure, and efficient systems that empower teams to innovate.My role also extends to monitoring and observability, leveraging Prometheus, Thanos, and Grafana to provide actionable insights into cloud and containerised environments. I contribute to open-source projects like Crossplane, Thanos, and the External Secrets Operator, and I’m passionate about integrating tools like Trivy and Sysdig Falco to ensure end-to-end container security.Whether it’s templating repositories with Backstage or automating workflows for Java, Go, Python, and Terraform, my work is all about enabling seamless collaboration, standardising best practices, and driving technical excellence. I’m always on the lookout for ways to drive innovation, empower teams, and create scalable, secure, and efficient solutions that make a lasting impact on both technology and the people who use it.I love what I do! My days are filled with collaborating with brilliant minds, learning about emerging technologies, and finding new innovative ways. I’m always up for a conversation about Cloud infrastructure, Observability, or CI/CD workflows.In my free time, I try to stay involved in the tech community, attending meetups, contributing to open-source projects, and sharing knowledge. I’ve come from a software development background and I enjoy the process of learning and applying new skills.I’m a firm believer in treating people with kindness and respect.
