About Alina Sun

Hi I’m Alina and I’m currently a Computer Science major at the University of Southern California. I spend my free time solo traveling, trying to get a better sense of the world and the people in it. From this, I’ve found some of the most kind and generous people who have taken me in, showed me their lives and made me feel like family all over the world. In a strong desire to give back, I wanted to find a way to give back to a larger community. I found my passion in computer science, education and information access. Today we have so much information at our fingertips, but I realized that’s not necessarily the case for everyone in the world. I took a semester off from USC in Fall 2016 to mentor and teach in Uganda. I spent my time mentoring incredibly bright students from all over Sub-Saharan Africa who had an interest in STEM related fields and helping them apply to universities in the US. I also was able to share my passion of coding with these students in hopes that they would consider majoring in computer science or see the relevance of computer science and programming to their desired field. Every student I met is incredibly bright and has done everything possible to make their dreams a reality. They have risen above and beyond and I can’t wait to see what all they accomplish. They are part of the reason I am compelled everyday to work harder, so that others like them can hopefully have a chance at a different life. It’s the people that I have met who have been so generous to me, the people I have met that have inspired me from their strength, intelligence and resilience and the people I know I will meet in the future that keep me passionate and driven towards helping others through computer science. I can’t wait to start my life and I can’t wait to start helping others start their lives. I would love to talk about my interests and experiences in computer science, life, and travel.
