About Sulan Kolatan

Şulan Kolatan is the principal and a co-founder of KOL/MAC Architecture + Design. She is a Professor of Architecture at Pratt Institute School of Architecture, Graduate Architecture and Urban Design (GAUD).In 2021-23 Kolatan received a National Science Foundation Convergence Accelerator Grant for ‘Reconfiguring Urban Shorelines for Resilience’. Her transdisciplinary research focuses on linking advanced digital design to new materials and fabrication techniques toward the enhancement of socio-ecological-urban resilience. In 2021 her firm was an awardee for the Future Shan Shui City Urban Design Competition in Lishui (China). Her work is in the permanent collections of numerous institutions, most notably, the MoMA New York (USA); the Canadian Centre for Architecture Montreal (Canada); Architekturmuseum Frankfurt (Germany), and the Centre Georges Pompidou Paris (France). Her firm was selected for the United States Pavilion at the 2004 International Venice Architecture Biennale and the 1st International Beijing Biennial of Architecture. Her work was nominated for the 2009 Index Award – Design to Improve Life (Denmark) and the 2008 Zumtobel Group Award - Innovations for Sustainability and Humanity in the Built Environment (Austria). She has received many honors and continues to be involved in international projects and research with industry and institutional partners such as ARUP (New York and London), DuPont (USA and Europe), the Columbia University Carleton Materials Lab, Materialise (Belgium), and the Stockholm Resilience Centre (Sweden). She has taught at a number of prominent schools of architecture as a Visiting Professor or Visiting Chair. Kolatan served as Acting Chair of the Lehrstuhl fŭr Entwerfen und Gebäudetechnologie Fachbereich Architektur at the Technische Universität Darmstadt, and as a distinguished jury member on multiple urban design competitions for the City of Istanbul. She lectures and speaks at academic and professional conferences nationally and internationally (Aspen Institute, Archilab).
