Dr. Sukumar Bandopadhyay has served as the Dean of the School of Mineral Engineering from July 2001-December 2005. He is a registered professional engineer in the State of Alaska.Dr. Bandopadhyay has received the Carol Feist award for outstanding undergraduate advising at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. He also received the SME Coal and Energy Division Distinguished Service Award, Society for Mining, metallurgy and Exploration\'s 2007 Ivan B. Rahn Education Award (2007), and the 2010 Howard N. Eavenson Award, 2019 Howard L Hartman Mine Ventilation Award for his contributions to Arctic open pit mine ventilation and 2019 AIME Erskine Ramsay Medal for his contributions to coal mine health and safety, productivity and leadership at SME coal and energy division.Dr. Bandopadhyay received the 2011 SME Percy Nicholls Award for \" notable contributions to the advancements of solid fuels in the state of Alaska and for scientific achievements in the field of solid fuel\". He also received the 2012 AIME Mineral Industry Education award \"for his leadership in the advancement of mining education in Alaska, successful mentoring of students worldwide, and promoting responsible and sustainable mining in the Arctic\".Dr. Bandopadhyay is a distinguished alumnus of Banaras Hindu University, and a Centennial Fellow of the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences, the Pennsylvania State University. He is a Distinguished Member of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration. Dr. Bandopadhyay has worked in coal and metal mines in various supervisory capacities for over five years. He has served in various capacities in SME/AIME and in the Coal Division. He has served as visiting professor at Lulea University, Sweden. He has also served on the United Nations’ Development Program as a TOKTEN consultant.
