ABOUT SUKHVINDER KALSI-RYAN

Since earning her Master’s degree in 2006, Dr. Sukhvinder Kalsi-Ryan has been awarded over $1.6 million in research grants as both a Primary and Co-Investigator, with funding from prestigious organizations such as the Weston Foundation, AO Spine North America, and the Ontario Neurotrauma Foundation. She earned her PhD in 2011 for leading the development of the Graded Redefined Assessment of Strength, Sensibility, and Prehension (GRASSP)—a transformative tool for quantifying upper limb impairment post-cervical spinal cord injury (SCI). This measure has since been successfully commercialized through her start-up, Neural Outcomes Consulting Inc.(NOCI), which supports innovation by providing commercialization expertise to inventor groups and consulting services to device and pharmaceutical companies worldwide. With a distinguished 25-year tenure at the University Health Network (UHN), Dr. Kalsi-Ryan advanced from roles as a physical therapist and postdoctoral fellow to serving as a Scientist, where she honed her expertise in bridging clinical care, research, and education. She has developed an international platform for rehabilitation science, focusing on upper limb recovery in tetraplegia, neurorestoration, and non-invasive neuro-modulation. Currently, Dr. Kalsi-Ryan is the Chief Scientific Officer at NOCI, where she leads initiatives to define outcome measures and support the efficacy of new interventions across neurological, oncological, and musculoskeletal domains. In November 2024, she joined the Board of Directors for the Canadian Physiotherapy Association (CPA), contributing her extensive knowledge to advance the profession. As an Assistant Professor in the Department of Physical Therapy at the University of Toronto, Dr. Kalsi-Ryan continues to inspire clinicians and researchers through education and mentorship. Her work focuses on advancing innovative neuro-restorative methods, quantifying neurological changes, and improving access to cutting-edge rehabilitation technologies. Dr. Kalsi-Ryan is also actively involved in collaborative projects, such as serving as a Steering Committee Member for RECODE Myelopathy. Dr. Kalsi-Ryan remains committed to driving innovation, integrating discovery with application, and improving quality of life for individuals with neurological impairments.
