As Co-Lead of a statewide training initiative, I help drive the development and implementation of a comprehensive program designed to expand and diversify the pipeline of infant and early childhood mental health consultants. The program focuses on recruiting and supporting individuals from underrepresented racial, ethnic, linguistic, and geographic communities to strengthen mental health consultation services in early care and education settings.Over the past four years, I have played a central role in every phase of the project:Program Design: Led field analysis by conducting focus groups with over 200 providers and consultants, alongside statewide surveys, to identify systemic gaps and inform program structure.Curriculum Development: Collaborated with subject matter experts to build a rigorous, equity-centered curriculum; authored 4 of 9 core training modules and reviewed additional content to ensure cohesion and quality.Practicum Leadership: Designed and led the development of the practicum component, a cornerstone of the program that provides applied learning and mentorship in real-world settings.Program Implementation: Co-led all aspects of rollout, including statewide outreach, applicant review and selection, instruction delivery, reflective practice facilitation, and ongoing student and faculty support.Stakeholder Engagement: Serve as the primary liaison between program leadership, students, and instructional staff to ensure alignment, responsiveness, and continual program improvement.My work is grounded in a deep commitment to equitable access, culturally responsive care, and systemic change within the early childhood mental health field.

ABOUT SUJATA BANSAL
Sujata Bansal is a recognized leader in Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health (IECMH), currently serving as an IECMH Specialist with the California Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health Consultation Network. She co-leads the development of California’s statewide IECMH Consultation Training Program, shaping the future of the field through her expertise in program design, workforce development, and systems-level change. With over 25 years of experience spanning direct clinical work, teaching, training, consultation, and program administration, Sujata has deep expertise in early care and education, contract and grant management, training and facilitation, and early childhood mental health. Prior to joining WestEd, she spent 18 years at First 5 Alameda County, where she was instrumental in designing and leading a county-wide ECMH Consultation program and played a key role in the development and implementation of Alameda County’s Quality Rating and Improvement System (QRIS). Sujata holds a B.A. in Psychology from the University of California, Berkeley, and an M.A. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Colorado, Denver. She is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) in California and holds endorsements as an Infant-Family and Early Childhood Mental Health Specialist and a Reflective Practice Facilitator II. She is conversationally fluent in Spanish and Hindi, further expanding her ability to connect with diverse communities.
