ABOUT SUHEL AL-JANABI

Mr Suhel al- Janabi is Executive Director of GeoMedia GmbH - a Consulting Company advising German and multilateral institutions at the interface of environment, development and communication. He is an expert with regard to developing strategies, planning processes and implementation of international environmental agreements, particularly the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). As a member of the German Delegation to relevant international conferences he works closely together with the German Ministry of the Environment and for development Co-operation (BMU and BMZ) as well as with their executing agencies (BfN and GIZ). For GTZ / GIZ he is since inter alia continuously supporting the supra-national Project “Implementing the Biodiversity Convention” and since 2007 advising the Central African Working Group on Biodiversity (GTBAC) as an operative instrument of the Central African Forest Commission COMIFAC. Supporting the implementation of UNFFCC Mr. Al-Janabi conducted 2005 and 2006 feasibility studies on climate change adaptation projects in West Africa (Benin, Mali). Mr. al- Janabi studied Geography, Ecology, and Economics with a focus on developing countries in Bonn, Germany. As an associate lecturer he taught on Geo-Information Systems as well as on Development Planning and International Co-operation at the Universities of Bonn and Abidjan (Côte d’Ivoire). He worked for several internationally acting organizations, such as the German Foundation for International Development (DSE), German Technical Co-operation (GTZ) and the Bonn Convention under the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP-CMS). As co-manager of the BMZ hosted – and GIZ implemented - the ABS Capacity Development Initiative. Mr. Al-Janabi is today in charge of conducting several multi-stakeholder processes in Africa and the Caribbean in close working relations with the private sector and the donors of the ABS Initiative Norway, Denmark, European Commission, France and BMZ.
