About Subrata Sanyal
With over 35 years of leadership in research, development, test, and evaluation (RDT & E). I am a defense technologist and measurement science (metrology) advocate dedicated to transitioning cutting-edge technologies from the laboratory to the warfighter. My career spans academia, industry, and government, providing me with a unique perspective on bridging the gap between innovation and operational reality. As U.S. Navy\'s METCAL program Chief Scientist at the Measurement Science & Engineering (MS) Department of NSWC Corona and former Measurement Standards Technical Advisor for Trusted AI & Autonomy at OUSW(R&E), I’m focused on building a foundation of scientifically-justified confidence (hence trust) in our nation\'s most advanced technology systems.Key highlights of my work include: Pioneering AI & Autonomy Standards: I conceived the robotics & autonomous systems (RAS) metrology (RASMet) program and strategizing to integrate it into the AI-enabled Intelligent RAS (IRAS) to ensure the accuracy and reliability of perception sensors (and high quality of their situational awareness data) in autonomous systems. Leading Joint-Service Metrology RDT & E for Measurement Standards: As the Navy Lead for the DoW\'s METCAL Advanced Technology Working Group (ATWG), I spearhead collaborative metrology RDT & E in critical & emerging technologies (AI, robotics, uncrewed systems, directed energy, additive manufacturing (AM), chemical & biological sensors, hypersonics, quantum science, etc.) with partners like OSW, DoW Services, NIST, NASA, DoE National Labs (like Sandia), etc. Spearheading Prolific Innovations: I authored over 100 technical publications, hold 29 U.S. patents and patent applications, have disclosed more than 25 DoW inventions, presented international talks, and currently co-authoring a book on AM metrology. Driving Technology Transition & Transfer (T3): I lead supporting deployment efforts for cutting-edge measurement technologies (e.g. a revolutionary quantum-based \"NIST on a Chip\"[NoaC] portfolio) that brings national measurement standards directly to the field. Fostering Future Leaders: A passionate STEM advocate, I have proudly mentored over 100 students, professors, scientists, and experts from academia, industry, and government, including 10+ DoW SMART & NREIP Scholars and multiple SMART SEED Grant awardees who are now shaping the future of defense and beyond. I am always open to connecting with fellow innovators, leaders, aspiring technologists, and PMs, who are passionate about solving critical national security challenges.
