Sports, games, and Monty Python. Those were my early influences. So how does that translate into a leader? More importantly, why should you care? Because I make better! Fill in the blank.In my career I\'ve filled in that blank with these: quality, value, ROI, process improvement, team building, executive leadership, test automation, and customer satisfaction.I was successful at each of these by drawing on four primary strengths.ANALYTICALI loved playing sports and games. Besides wanting to win, the real fun was the analysis, determining the best course of action given the situation. In sports that was analyzing opponent’s strengths and weaknesses. In games that was analyzing the data and deciding the next best move. At work I utilize these same analysis skills every day to decide the optimal strategy for any task or project.DECISIVEI decide. I analyze, but I’m not paralyzed. Make a move! Go! Do something! I always tell my teams “If it doesn\'t work out, learn from it and adjust”. I\'ve also had to be decisive in standing up for quality or customers. These are often difficult decisions and require hard internal discussions, but doing nothing is worse.CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENTPlan-Do-Check-Act. I\'ve taught and practiced PDCA and its application in Agile methodologies. My early career was spent in many waterfall projects, so I know its short-comings. Which is why I’m now a Lean/Agile practitioner, coach, and advocate.LEADERBack to sports. Great coaches taught me the leadership principles I apply. Analysis. Preparation. “Communicate” and work together to succeed. Everyone contributes. We get better together, every time, every game, every project.So now I’m sure you’re thinking “I must work with Stuart immediately! But wait, what about Monty Python?” Let’s just say, I like to laugh and believe in humor in the workplace. I loved MP’s combination of dry wit and zaniness, because it is very much like my own.
