ABOUT STEVEN LANG
I am actively in my third year of undergraduate with interests in banking and financial industry to gain valuable and hands-on skills that allow me to expose myself to the field of finance. I am taking my abilities in mathematics and applying them to explore the world of finance. I am originally from Hickory, North Carolina pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Business Finance with a concentration in General Finance at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte to value experiences and opportunities that will help me use them in my future career. As a first-generation college student, it was a challenge to figure out what my goals and passions are along with finding a community when stepping foot into college. Considering my options to study, I find that the field of finance gives me a sense and allows me to embrace my interest in not only my mathematical skills but also my critical thinking skills. Being able to solve math problems to determine the right solution satisfies me and shows how there is always a determinate solution at the end of the mathematical process. Combining my problem-solving, communication, and Excel skills will help me develop into a branch of business. My recent work experience includes being an Undergraduate Teaching Assistant/Preceptor for UNC Charlotte’s Department of Mathematics and Statistics where I assist the professor in STAT - Introduction to Statistics course. I serve as a mentor to help students with their academic journey along with gaining leadership skills. A useful tool such as Microsoft Excel is used in this course where I can help students navigate the basic functions of Excel to calculate statistical variables and apply them to their learning material. Students often find it difficult to use Excel since they are not familiar with it coming into this class, but it is my responsibility to guide them and make sure they succeed. Being involved in campus life is an important aspect of my college experience. I am currently part of an organization called the Vietnamese Student Association where I served as intern and then continued to run the organization as Treasurer. This has helped me make connections with people and engage with my culture while being away from home. I was able to participate in general body meetings, and executive board meetings along with collaborating as a team while working in a positive environment.
