S•••••••@gmail.comDr. Steven Lai Hing is a continously appointed Honors Professor of Chemistry at Oakwood University in Huntsville, Alabama, where he combines scientific rigor, leadership training, and mentorship to empower the next generation of STEM professionals. A proud legacy alumnus of Oakwood University, Dr. Lai Hing earned his B.S. in Biochemistry, followed by a M.S. in Biochemistry and Ph.D. in Biology from Texas A&M University, College Station. He also holds an MBA in Leadership from Oakwood University. At Oakwood, he teaches a wide range of chemistry courses—including General and Honors Chemistry, Intro to Organic and Biochemistry, and Research Methods—and is Quality Matters certified in online and hybrid course design to ensure high-impact digital learning experiences. He also teaches a research course in the MBA Program. His research spans environmental and pedagogical chemistry, from studying the photodegradation of sunscreen compounds and leaching of personal-care products into wastewater to STEM and AI integration in higher education. His innovation in teaching earned him recognition as a Stanford Teaching Innovator through the Stanford d.school Teaching & Learning Studio (TLS) programs (1.0 and 2.0). In Summer 2024, he returned to the Palo Alto campus as an Invited Alum in Residence and was also named to the inaugural Oakwood University Teaching Fellows Program. Dr. Lai Hing was promoted to Full Professor in 2023 and granted continuous appointment in 2024. He has coauthored three chemistry textbooks with Professor Cheri Hodnett, and his doctoral research at Texas A&M contributed to multiple drug candidates now under patent hold and FDA accelerated review.As Principal Investigator on the NSF HBCU-UP Implementation Grant and ALSAMP collaboration (2017–2025), he has led multi-year initiatives to improve STEM education, research capacity, and student retention at Oakwood University.Beyond the classroom, Dr. Lai Hing serves as Head Coach of Oakwood’s 2024 National Champion Honda Campus All-Star Challenge Team, Fulbright Scholar Liaison, and Board Chair of the North Alabama Red Cross—roles that reflect his commitment to leadership, service, and academic excellence.
