ABOUT STEVEN RUNGE
I am a 1986 graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay where I majored in Human Adaptability with co-majors in Biology and Chemistry and I earned a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from The Ohio State University in 1991. I joined the Department of Biology at the University of Central Arkansas in 1991 and began my foray into administration in 2003 when I was appointed Interim Chair of the Department of Biology, with a subsequent appointment to the Chair’s position in 2004. I was appointed as Interim Dean of the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics (CNSM) in 2009 and I assumed the position of Dean of the College in July 2010. In February 2012 I was appointed Interim Provost and Vice-President for Academic Affairs at UCA and became Provost and Vice-President for Academic Affairs in February 2013 and Executive Vice President and Provost in July 2014. I served in this capacity until the end of July 2017 when I returned to my home Department of Biology at UCA as a Professor of Biology.I have developed and taught courses in molecular and cellular biology ranging from the freshman level through graduate offerings. I have mentored student research studying cell death mechanisms in cultured breast cancer cells and have also published pedagogical innovations for teaching cell and molecular biology. I have been heavily involved in a wide variety of academic and non-academic activities in Arkansas. I represented UCA on the Arkansas Department of Higher Education Strategic Planning Steering Committee, the Student Success Committee (strategic planning), and the Concurrent Credit Advisory Committee. I have served as Chair on the Board of Directors of the Arkansas STEM Coalition, as the UCA representative on the Arkansas INBRE (IDEA Network for Biomedical Research Excellence) Steering Committee, and I am a founding member of the Board of Directors for Arkansas Preschool +(plus). I served for ten years on the Board of Directors for the Mayflower (AR) Public Schools.
