About Steven Guttmann
Steve Guttmann is a Principal Emeritus at Guttmann & Blaevoet (G&B). He joined the firm in 1986, and has almost 40 years of leadership in integrated building design, energy conservation, and sustainable and healthy building design. G&B is a mid-sized consulting engineering firm in California that has received national and regional ASHRAE awards for innovation in sustainable design.Under his leadership, Guttmann & Blaevoet has a track record with introducing and successfully delivering some of the most significant advances in technology applications over the past twenty-five years, such as UFAD, chilled beams, radiant heating/cooling, and ground source heat pumps; innovations that have helped elevate and revolutionize the built environment. Over 90% of the firm’s projects in 2022 were all-electric, signaling a rapid shift in the marketplace as decarbonization becomes a national imperative.Steve has extensive experience in the energy analysis, design and construction of complex projects, including higher education facilities, libraries, hospitals and medical centers, laboratories, museums and aquariums, and performing arts/media facilities. He has presented on topics concerning sustainable design at numerous conferences, including GreenBuild, the ASHE Planning, Design & Construction Conference, and CleanMed, as well as attending the Hospital Build Middle East Conference in 2010 as the keynote speaker. He is currently a Technical Advisor in the Academy of Art University graduate and undergraduate architectural design studios.Steve is also Past President of the Board of the William Worthen Foundation, a non-profit focused on gathering, educating, and inspiring practicable action for resilient communities. The Foundation published the “Building Decarbonization Practice Guide: A Zero Carbon Future for the Built Environment”, for which Steve served as the Principal Investigator and a contributing author.Steve served on the ASHRAE Task Force for Building Decarbonization. He has been involved in the efforts of the Task Force since 2021, helped develop the recently published “Decarbonizing Hospital Buildings” as well as Part 1 of “Decarbonizing Building Thermal Systems” published jointly by ASHRAE and NREL in September of 2024. He is also the decarbonization specialist working on ASHRAE’s update to their Cold Climate Design Guide.He is a 1983 graduate of the University of California, Santa Barbara, with a B.S. with Honors in Mechanical Engineering; and a B.A. with Honors in Environmental Studies.
