ABOUT STEVEN KISS
I am a BS/MS Computer Science student at Purdue University concentrating in Machine Learning, graduating December 2026 (BS) and December 2027 (MS). My work sits at the intersection of machine learning research and real-world engineering. I am currently apart of two AI-focused labs at Purdue. In the AI Forge lab, I developed a specialized Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) system for large-scale educational Q&A. It has now been built into a platform that is undergoing beta testing with classes at Purdue. For the RAG system, I also built a benchmarking pipeline for document retrieval to assess whether implementation choices lead to an improvement with the RAG system. In my Translational Medical Imaging Computing Lab (TMIC), I focus on building multimodal models that combine medical imaging with clinical data to predict pancreatic cancer patient outcomes. I utilize deep learning techniques and trying new methodologies in order to maximize model performance.I have industry experience through my previous hardware-focused engineering through my work at MITRE, where I contributed to ASIC development. I have also applied data science experience through my paid work at Kimberly Clark through Purdue\'s Data Mine. I worked full-time for them for the 2025 Summer where I built an end-to-end data processing pipeline that reduced 2 months of manual labor to a 10-minute python script that achieved an accuracy of 99.5%.Beyond research and industry, I have software development experience from building a Chinese Character Practice App, a full-stack mobile application designed for Chinese language learners at Purdue. This app leverages React Native, Firebase, Flask, and Python to enable personalized flashcard creation, real-time Hanzi stroke practice, and vocabulary extraction from documents.Outside of the technical space, I enjoy anything involving the outdoors, from mountain biking to skiing and everything in between.
