I love helping people understand investing and the financial markets.I bought my first stock at the age of 13, so I\'ve been at it for quite a while.For over a decade I\'ve managed the Grey Value Opportunity Fund, an investment partnership dedicated to value-oriented investing.I\'ve had the good fortune to have had several remarkable mentors and colleagues throughout my career.My education in investing began with a gentleman named Benno Schmidt, Sr. My father was a corporate pilot who spent many years flying Benno around the world. Benno co-founded the venture capital firm J. H. Whitney & Company with John Hay Whitney in 1946. He was a brilliant investor, and literally coined the term “venture capital” (it was a truncation of “adventure”). Benno was also uniquely generous, always happy to have me tag along on business trips. Being able to watch and learn from him was an extraordinary privilege. It was also tremendous fun.Another mentor who had a huge impact on me was Jim Rogers, who was George Soros’ original partner in the Quantum Fund. I studied under Jim at Columbia University while doing my MBA there. I\'ve never met a shrewder investor or a more acute thinker. By example and classroom crucible, Jim taught me what genuinely rigorous analysis is all about. I also treasure the time I spent with Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, whom I worked very closely with in launching Albright Capital Management. ACM oversaw a multi-strategy fund that focused on emerging markets with an emphasis on frontier economies. I travelled all over the world with Madame Secretary, and there\'s no one I have respected or admired more.During the 5+ years I co-managed an event-driven risk arbitrage hedge fund in NYC, I never slept less or learned more in my life. It was a pivotal education in risk management and analysis. My education played a big role in my career path. I graduated from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Business (MBA) in 1997, the Tulane University School of Law (JD) in 1995, and the University of Texas at Austin (BA - Honors) in 1990. In the midst of my law degree I went to Japan and studied law there (I minored in Japanese in college). I couldn\'t help but fall in love with the place, so I stayed and worked for a law firm in Tokyo for a couple of years.When I\'m not exploring new investment opportunities, I\'m frequently on a motorcycle exploring new places. I\'ve ridden over miles in the US and abroad. Though that may sound like a lot, it\'s a big world - I still feel like I\'m just getting started.
