ABOUT STEVEN BINGLER

Steven Bingler is the founder and CEO of Concordia, a community centered planning and architectural design practice headquartered in New Orleans. Concordia, which means agreement between people and harmony among things, is the firm’s one word mission statement. The firm’s award winning community based housing, education, recreation and cultural projects have appeared in many national publications, including Metropolis, Architecture, Architectural Digest, Newsweek, the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, USA Today and the Wall Street Journal. Steven\'s manuscripts and research papers have been published in books and journals in the fields of urban planning, architectural design, education, public health and smart growth. He has served as a special consultant to the Office of the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Education for policy related for the design of schools as centers of the community. Other research alliances have included the MIT Media Lab, Harvard University’s Project Zero, the University of New Mexico, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, the Thornburg Institute, and the Appalachian and West Ed Laboratories. For Steven is also a musician and naturalist. He grew up in a working class family in Charlottesville, Virginia where he honed his commitment to democratic design principles. He received his degree in architecture from the University of Virginia and is a member of the university’s prestigious Raven Society. In 2014 Steven co-authored an Op Ed for the New York Times advocating for the realignment of contemporary practice towards greater inclusion and design equity. The result has been a healthy dialogue among a national cohort of design professionals. Steven is currently exploring relationships between the common ground of universal design principles and the creative edge of discovery and innovation as source for the creation of new commonedge tools for inclusive planning and design thinking.
