About Steve Kirschner
Psychotherapist/Psychoanalyst currently in private practice in Manhattan. Formerly Co Director, faculty, supervisor and training analyst at the Manhattan Institute for Psychoanalysis. Faculty and supervisor at the Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Study Center and Faculty at the National Institute for the Psychotherapies. I also run private reading and consultation groups on psychotherapy and psychoanalysis. People seek psychotherapy for help, sometimes with specific problems- addiction, anxiety, eating disorders, depression- sometimes for less specific concerns having to do with the uncertainty, mystery, suffering and tragedy that are woven into every life. There are no simple formula for helping people but there are necessary elements: an atmosphere of safety and respect; and openness to and curiosity about the uniqueness of each person. Therapy is essentially a conversation, or a series of conversations, in which therapist and patient explore the patient\'s problems and difficulties in living and create meaningful solutions. The opportunity provided by therapy for greater self awareness allows people to stop self-defeating behaviors and destructive patterns of living and to get on with making the best use of their time and talents. In my practice I see individual adults, adolescents and couples. I am experienced working with a range of issues including depression, anxiety, separating from a cult, trauma, learning difficulties, ADD, eating disorders, intimacy issues, substance abuse, sexual problems, work and creative inhibitions. I bring an array of training and experience to my work: relational psychoanalysis, transpersonal psychology, cognitive behavioral techniques, acceptance and commitment therapy, knowledge of Buddhist and other meditation traditions and training in family systems theory and couples counseling. Currently I’m running reading and consultation groups for clinicians on Winnicott, British Object Relations, Atfachment theory and the Relational orientation.
