About Steve Winfrey
I currently serve as the Director of the Memorial Union at Iowa State University. I have served in Higher Education for 25+ years. My career path was created out of my personal story as a first generation college student. Born and raised in Hawaii, I was part of blended lower-middle class family. Though I present as caucasian, my ethnic background includes 1/4 Hawaiian, 1/4 Japanese, and a mix of Tahitian, Native American (Black Foot Tribe), and a little French Canadien. My ethnic background helps me better understand international students and underserved student populations. Using my experiences as a youth (good and not so good), I utilized this to serve students in residence life, student activities, leadership instruction, student unions, and within leadership programs I developed over the years. After several years of training in NLP, hypnosis (certified) leadership development, management theory, counseling, and coaching, I developed skill sets for creating positive change in people in a very short amount of time. Be it confidence, reducing negative self-beliefs, motivation, learning difficulties, leadership abilities, speaking in front of groups, and even helping individuals reduce stuttering, I love to help students create the change they want using a system based on multiple theories and methodologies. Though my time is limited, I also work with companies and organizations to develop leadership skills at all levels; some of which have included Target, Best Buy, Medtronic, Roers Construction, and several others! I completed my Ph.D in Higher Education at North Dakota State University in Fargo, ND (12/2020).
