ABOUT STEVE THOMAS

I am a solutions focussed health & safety, risk and insurance professional, with 29 years experience of providing risk management advice, services and support to a wide variety of organisations. An excellent communicator with the interpersonal skills and ability to engage with stakeholders/clients at all organisational levels. Proven leadership skills including managing, developing and motivating teams to achieve their personal and organisational objectives.My risk management journey started at Powys County Council in 1996 as their Insurance Officer, establishing and implementing a new claims management system and processes. A career development opportunity in saw a move into the Powys Corporate H&S team, where I could more directly influence the quality of health and safety management and its outputs. I subsequently passed my NEBOSH qualifications and gained Chartered Safety Practitioner status (CMIOSH) in 2005, shortly before moving to Cardiff Council, where I refreshed my knowledge of casualty risk management and insurance claims management as Operational Risk Management Officer. I joined Zurich Risk Engineering’s Casualty Practice as a Risk Consultant in July 2012. Promotion to Senior Risk Consultant in late 2016 was soon followed by a move to Team Leader - overseeing the day to day management of one of the casualty teams within the Practice, as well as responsibility for ZM fee work, contract management and workload distribution.Moving back into a client facing role with Gallagher Risk Management Solutions in May 2021 I, again, took a hybrid (client facing and people management) Team Leader role when the Practice was restructured a few months later. Following redundancy from the (now dissolved) Crawford Risk Consulting practice in October 2025, and a brief sabbatical out of the workplace, I am fortunate to have been able to return to the Gallagher Risk Management Solutions Practice in a blended Team Leader/Risk Consultant role again. A breadth of both commercial and public sector experience with skills, knowledge and expertise in; motor, parks (inc tree management), highway liabilities, manual handling, the social care environment, housing maintenance services, EL and complex claims management and investigation (among others)Experience in developing and delivering training on various risk management, insurance and health and safety issues at all levels. Accredited to deliver a range of IOSH certificated courses.
