About Steve Mital
In my 21 years at University of Oregon, I have won more than in grants and contracts for programs under my supervision. In 2007 I became the founding director for the UO Office of Sustainability. Its broad mission is to “Lead the integration of \'sustainability\' into the University of Oregon\'s operations, curriculum, co-curriculum, research, and engagement with the broader community.” Results include an institutional decarbonization plan, metrics to track institutional progress, a green building and energy conservation policy, a new graduate certificate program, a sustainability fellows program for faculty, and a sustainability-themed residence hall. These and other initiatives have earned the UO top 20 rankings on Princeton Review’s Green Honor Roll and Sierra Club\'s Cool School list. The Sustainability Office now has six full-time staff. In 2001, I founded the Environmental Leadership Program (ELP) with support from the Environmental Studies Program. ELP is a service-learning program designed to: 1) Compliment undergraduate and graduate students’ traditional academic training with project-based opportunities that prepare them for the real world 2) Provide local businesses, non-profits, and agencies with low-cost services.ELP now has two full-time co-directors, an annual operating budget of and has completed 80 projects for 40 local businesses, agencies, and non-profits. I am deeply proud to say that many of my ELP students have found career-oriented employment in the region and keep in touch with me to this day.
