Most bug bounty programs measure themselves using internal metrics.Researchers evaluate them very differently.After working alongside both program teams and hackers across the security ecosystem, one pattern kept appearing. Programs often believe they are operating at a high level of maturity while researchers experience something very different.That observation led me to create the Bug Bounty Maturity Framework.I have spent the past decade working across customer success, security program ecosystems, and community driven security initiatives with companies including HackerOne, Spearbit, Gartner, and now Sysdig.At HackerOne I worked directly with enterprise customers managing bug bounty programs alongside security leaders and engineers. I also helped build and lead the Hacker Success Manager program, which focused on supporting and advocating for the researcher community.While building the partnerships organization at Critical Thinking, I continued working across both sides of the ecosystem by collaborating with program leaders, engaging with hackers, and establishing partnerships for the Critical Thinking Bug Bounty Podcast with major platforms including HackerOne, Bugcrowd, YesWeHack, and Intigriti.Those experiences consistently revealed the same gap.Programs measure performance through internal operations. Researchers evaluate programs through experience.The Bug Bounty Maturity Framework was created to bridge that gap.BBMF is an independent research initiative designed to measure the structural maturity of vulnerability disclosure and bug bounty programs from the researcher perspective.
