ABOUT STEVE HUGHES
I am a former Gwent Police Detective Sergeant with extensive experience investigating Organised Crime. I have over 21 years service, 17 years in CID, 9 of which were investigating Organised Crime, primarily drug trafficking and money laundering. I have conducted many large-scale complex pro-active and reactive investigations. I have significant practical experience successfully utilising different covert policing methods. I am very experienced in analysing criminal networks to identify the key individuals and patterns of behaviour, using that information I have a proven track record of making sound operational decisions that have brought numerous Organised Crime Groups (OCGs) to justice.I am a qualified Covert Advanced Open Source and internet Research Investigator. In 2015 I qualified to the rank of Inspector. During my service I received 6 Chief Constable’s Commendations and 1 Judge’s Commendation for investigating Organised Crime and as a Disclosure Officer at a murder trial.My last role in Gwent Police was as Detective Sergeant Intelligence - managing the police response to risk/threat/harm intelligence and developing the intelligence response to ‘live’ serious incidents. In March 2017 I was medically retired due to an injury on duty. Between September 2018 and July 2019, I worked as a civilian investigator for Gwent Police Financial Investigations Unit investigating allegations of corruption in local government. From 2019 and 2021, I worked as the Policy and Governance Officer for CCTV at Blaenau Gwent Council. In 2022 I concentrated on property development and my American BBQ food pop-up.My most recent role in 2023 was as a Recruitment Associate for Corporate/Banking Treasury and Treasury Risk sectors in UK, US, and European markets. I left this job in August 23.I am married with three young children, twins aged 4 and a 5-year-old, all now school age. My hobbies are running an American BBQ food pop-up, property development, reading history and current affairs.
