Sera Prognostics was one of several start-ups co-founded by Denny Farrar, Steve Borst and Ted Stanley, MD, that led to the formation of UpStart Life Sciences Capital. This team would go on to start 12 companies with various scientists, creating the bulk of the UpStart portfolio. Sean Esplin, MD & Steven Graves, PhD, originally discovered specific predictive protein signatures in the blood of pregnant women who delivered their babies pre-term. The work of Esplin and Graves led to the formation of Sera Prognostics and an early investment from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Today, Sera (NASDAQ:SERA) is marketing its novel prognostic test for pregnant women in their second trimester to determine their likelihood of delivery before 37 weeks of gestation, prior to which the health risks to babies and mothers and associated costs of care dramatically increase. Knowing of this risk allows physicians and care givers to better manage the pregnancy leading to healthier babies at significanlty reduced healthcare costs.
