ABOUT STEPHEN HUGHES

Joined as an Army Apprentice in 1982 and served as a Combat Engineer until present day. A good mix of training delivery and operational experience over 38 years service with the Royal Engineers. Diving Supervisor, Field Firing Qualified, Commando trained. 10 tours to NI, Bosnia, Sierra Leone, Falklands, Iraq and Afghanistan. Two operational commendations and promotion through the ranks to LE Capt in 2007. Selected for ICSC(L) and promotion to Maj in Dec 11. Wide range of experience; from Project Management of several large scale projects in hostile environments and procurement of remote demolition firing devices, themal and moving target technology. Provided technical subject matter expert advice to several mobility and survivability procurement teams. Generated training solutions for bringing equipment into core and managing distributed individual training. Selected for Reg C conversion and assumed command of 63 HQ & Trg Sp Sqn. Corps level NATO experience at HQ ARRC as Ops/Plans Officer and lead for developing new Rear Operations doctrine. Recently employed as Second-in-Command of 24 Cdo RE. Promoted to Lt Col in Mar 19 and deployed Afghanistan for my 10th tour to see out my career in an SO1 Ops/Plans job at HQ RS, reponsible for mentoring election security and base closure planning amongst other things. Since leaving the forces, I have worked on a number of security management contracts and as a part-time Facilitator and Project Manager for Splash.I am looking forward to retirement to fix up my cottage and old motorbikes; Stroud Brewery and cheering on Gloucester Rugby from The Shed.Specialties: Operations, Planning, Project Management, Diving Supervisor, Training Design, Avalanche Controller, Leadership and Management, Engineering Consultant, common sense and sense of humour.
