About Stephen Obie
Recognized twice by The National Law Journal as a regulatory, compliance and fintech trailblazer, I advise multinational corporations and individuals on compliance with U.S. banking, securities, commodities and energy laws. I have represented clients before the Securities & Exchange Commission (SEC), Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), the US Treasury’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network FINCEN), Financial Regulatory Authority (FINRA) National Futures Association (NFA) and the US Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). My extensive experience includes investigating and litigating cases involving false reporting of pricing benchmark; energy market manipulation; foreign currency fraud; insider trading; disruptive trading (spoofing) and whistleblowers. In the area of fintech and blockchain, I led the team that obtained the first ever effective registration statement that contemplated a public offering utilizing blockchain technology. I also represent technology companies navigating the complex US and New York State regulatory apparatus in the areas of fintech, cyrptoassets and digital currencies. Prior to joining Jones Day, I held several top positions at the CFTC, including Acting Director of the CFTC\'s Division of Enforcement, and co-chair of the Securities and Commodities Subcommittee of the President\'s Financial Fraud Enforcement Task Force. While at the CFTC, I advised senior management and presidential appointees on enforcement and policy matters, interacting frequently with federal authorities and international regulators. I am a regular panelist on legislative, regulatory, and enforcement developments in the commodities and derivatives markets and have been interviewed by leading newspapers and television programs. I speak worldwide at various conferences.
