Using my Rail Network Operational knowledge to inform and advise on UK Network projects for Network Rail. I have been involved in numerous projects in my role, advising on operational matters from my expansive Rail knowledge from my experience and built knowledge. I seek out information to ensure my knowledge is kept current and ensure any assumptions are correct checked directly with route operators. I was part of the team whom successfully delivered the £191 million Crewe Basford Hall Independent Lines Re-signalling and re control Christmas 2024 on time and to programme. This project saw the decommission of three signalling locations, and re control of the area to two new WestCAD workstations at MROC.

ABOUT STEPHEN KAY
I have been on the Railway (UK) since 2001. Amazing as I started part time as a stop gap and well, as they say, the rest is history.I am a highly motivated person and a natural leader, I work well in a large team or on my own. I have been involved with many different roles on the railway from customer front line services, tickets, welcome host, attending press function, train dispatch and first class customer experience through to today’s role in Network Operations and managing incidents with Network Rail. My time in operations has been moving through various roles, firstly as a signaller in the Crewe area including SS North and Crewe SCC, Mobile Operations Manager, and now LOM, the second post in this role being Crewe South managing Basford Hall, SS North and Crewe SCC. I am able to motivate my team to be more productive and formulate solutions to scenarios before or as they arise. I am always looking to learn new topics surrounding the rail industry and always make it my aim to expand my knowledge and work with new teams and departments, sharing information along the way. My History.During my railway career I have - worked in customer service (Virgin Trains)in mutilple roles,[dispatch, customer information, first class lounge, tickets, welcome host, and moving between varying stations-Stoke,Stafford,Manchester and Crewe] then after two and a half years I transferred to Network Rail as a signaller. Working my way through signalling grades,[Steelworks, Salop Goods Junction, Sorting Sidings North] eventually ending up at Crewe Signalling Centre. After over five years in the signalling centre an opportunity arose to become a MOM and I took it, relishing the new experiences it would bring to me. The MOM role is a reactive role and I responded to railway emergencies, derailments, failure of equipment and fatalities. In-between response calls, audits and visits to signal boxes were the routine day to day task. Most recently I have moved into a LOM position where I am now responsible for signal boxes on the WCML (Crewe SCC and Basford Hall) and SS North on the freight independent lines, and 24 signallers. The role involves assessing the signallers, attending project meetings, taking part and leading investigations, and numerous other tasks that involve keeping the railways moving, and cooperatively working with other NR staff and TOCS & FOCS. I have recently volunteered at Crewe Heritage Centre where I plan to train the old Crewe North Junction to keep the railway history alive in Crewe.
