ABOUT STEPHEN HERTING
We are located far off the grid in remote, rural Alaska.(Check out Naknek, AK on Google Maps.) We are only accessible by airplane, as there are no roads to get here. I have started a new career as Executive Director of a small, federally subsidized rural medical clinic. We service three small villages having a total of about population, swelling to population in the summer when the salmon run. It is a beautiful wilderness area, with wonderful opportunities for fishing, hunting and exploring. I call this a \"failed retirement.\" I tried my hardest to retire-to be content in California, sitting around in my pajamas until noon, playing the piano, reading my Nook and waving at the neighbors. However, I just couldn\'t make it! So here I am (age 71) working again, at a very challenging job in a new career field, living out at the end of the world. Our little clinic tries to be everything to everyone in our remote area. The nearest hospitals are airplane flights away. Therefore, besides primary care facilities, we have a small dispensing pharmacy, a laboratory, a medical supply store, a radiology unit, temporary housing and an emergent-care facility. We have a Medical Director (M.D.) visiting quarterly, with most care provided by Physician Assistants, Advanced Nurse Practitioners, and Medical Assistants. Ambulances frequently bring patients to our back door. We arrange medical evacuation for hard cases to Anchorage or Dillingham hospitals. We do our own medical coding and billing. Plus, we manage government grants and report to a community board. All this with 8-12 employees. I am also on the Board of Directors of the Bristol Bay Borough Chamber of Commerce and serve as Chair of the Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC) for the Borough. I am on the board of the Alaska Primary Care Association (ASPA). I am not looking for any other jobs, but do enjoy hearing from colleagues and following trends in healthcare and defense industries.
