About Stephen Ewing
Stephen Ewing is a 2025 Washington and Lee University graduate passionate about building relationships and serving others in medicine. Stephen is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience with a minor in Mathematics. While at W&L, Stephen led the Men’s Varsity swim team as Team Captain. During his college swimming career, he broke the ODAC Conference Record in the 1650 Freestyle and earned NCAA Scholar All-American accolades. Growing up, he was surrounded by chronic illness in his family: his older brother and younger sister both have Type 1 Diabetes. Caretaking for his younger sister and watching his siblings manage this condition in a medically underserved area ignited his desire to pursue a medical career emphasizing patient care. When his high school swim coach and mentor passed away at the age of 41 because of avoidance and lack of medical care, this event further cemented Stephen’s resolve to pursue a career in medicine. Stephen excels in areas where he can apply his analytical and collaboration skills. While at W&L, Stephen honed his computational skills by building a physiological respiratory sinus arrhythmia model under Professor Ryan Brindle and machine learning simulations of mRNA Translation in a yeast cell under Professor Kyle Friend. As a part of these individual research projects, Stephen managed his computer programming and physiological knowledge while effectively communicating with his project investigators and mentors. Shadowing physicians in New Mexico and Virginia has shown him the importance of patient-centered care and teamwork in a medical setting. Stephen leads by example and cares for others while serving the local community. As a Team Captain of Washington and Lee’s NCAA Varsity Swim Team, he devoted weekly time to mentoring and advising his teammates through their academic, social, and personal challenges. In this role, he organized team-wide volunteer service events for the underserved and under-resourced in the rural Rockbridge Area. He provided volunteer swim lessons through W&L’s Swim Lesson Program and community service through Habitat for Humanity. He was also a peer mentor through the W&L Johnson Scholar program, a full-ride scholarship that he was awarded based on leadership and academics. Stephen has spent over hours swimming across his 18-year swim career. He has completed two Olympic distance triathlons. He also loves to play pickleball, lift weights, and read good books.
