ABOUT STEPHEN E. HAWES

I am a Professor in the Department of Epidemiology in the School of Public Health at the University of Washington (UW) and have an adjunct appointment in the Departments of Global Health. I served as Chair of the Epidemiology Department from 2018 to 2023. I have graduate degrees in biostatistics and epidemiology, and have taught numerous undergraduate and graduate courses in applied epidemiology. My primary research interests are in human papillomavirus (HPV) and other sexually transmitted infections, cervical and anal cancer, and HIV and I have more than 25 years of research experience conducting observational cohort studies and clinical trials in Senegal, West Africa as well as in Seattle. I am Director of the UW Strategic Analysis, Research and Training (START) Center, a Gates Foundation funded research and training center within the Department of Global Health, and have conducted numerous global mentoring and scientific research workshops in Kenya, Namibia, Peru, Vietnam and India.
