ABOUT STEPHEN CAMPBELL

At 17, I made the decision to leave college and join the Armed Forces. In many ways, it felt like a natural step. Growing up, I had always wanted to be a soldier. I loved being outdoors, staying physically active, listening to the occasional war stories my Grandad would share, and spending Sunday afternoons watching old black-and-white war films. For me, it was about being part of something bigger than myself — being part of a close-knit team and serving a purpose.After plenty of family discussions, conversations with career advisors, and perhaps a little inspiration from the film Battle of Britain, I joined the Royal Air Force in May 1997 (although not as a fighter pilot!).After passing out of RAF Regiment basic training, my first posting was to the Queen’s Colour Squadron — the RAF’s key ceremonial unit. This role gave me the privilege of representing the RAF at state and ceremonial events around the world, as well as deploying on my first operational tour to Kuwait at just 18 years old.From there, I went on to serve on a number of operational squadrons, progressing through the ranks and specialising in several roles, including Sniper Commander and Platoon Sergeant. These positions gave me the honour of leading highly trained teams on combat operations in both Iraq and Afghanistan.Fast forward 24 years and, after welcoming my baby daughter into the world, I decided the time was right to step away from military service and explore a new chapter.Like many people transitioning from the Armed Forces, I found myself back at the beginning in some ways — curious about what life might look like outside the military. I was particularly interested in moving into Project Management, so after completing a number of accredited PM courses, I took the leap and started applying for roles.Today, I’m fortunate to be working as a Project Manager at Baillie Gifford, alongside a fantastic team who have been incredibly supportive in helping me navigate the transition and settle into my new role. It’s been a steep learning curve, but it’s been refreshing to feel that sense of stretch again.Having an Armed Forces Network within the firm, combined with my recent decision to join the RAF Reserves, means I’ve been able to embrace this new career while still keeping a connection to the environment and values that shaped much of my life.If there’s one mantra that has guided me through these transitions, it’s this:Believe in yourself. Confront your fears and doubts. And no matter what — at least try.
