About Stephen Boyles
Steve grew up on farms with cattle, sheep, hogs and draft horses. His current area of focus in extension programming is Beef Quality Assurance, Animal Handling and Facility Design. He is the 2021 National Beef Quality Assurance Educator of the Year. He received the Ohio Cattlemen’s Association - Industry Service Award and the Excellence in Extension Award from OSU Extension. His OSU on-campus teaching involves a course dealing with animal welfare. Steve received the highest award OSU bestows for classroom teaching, the OSU Alumni Award for Distinguished Teaching. Besides serving as a beef extension specialist to Ohio’s beef producers, Dr. Boyles has worked as a beef cattle nutritionist and more recently in animal handling/facility design in North America, South America, Asia, the Middle East and Eastern Europe. Dr. Boyles is also involved in conducting environmental assessments and animal welfare audits of livestock operations in the U.S. One of his latest activities is working with first responders (police & emergency crews) on how to handle livestock in highway accidents (Bovine Emergency Response Plan, BERP).
