ABOUT STEPHEN B. PHILLIPS
I have spent more than three decades at the intersection of art, scholarship, and institutional leadership. I first rose through every curatorial rank at The Phillips Collection, and since 2007 I directed the Federal Reserve Board\'s Fine Arts Program, one of the federal government\'s most distinguished art-in-the-workplace programs. Over that span I have acquired more than artworks by 700+ artists, organized and curated 80+ exhibitions, commissioned original works by artists including Sanford Biggers, Leonardo Drew, Sean Scully, and Fred Wilson, and produced major publications with Rizzoli and Merrell. I have built and sustained international partnerships with the Banque de France, the Bank of Japan, and the Central Bank of Turkey, and delivered lectures at venues from the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth to the Mint Museum of Art and Ringling Museum of Art. My work spans collection stewardship, strategic planning, budget management, donor cultivation, and public engagement. I have managed curatorial budgets of up to $1.5M annually, chaired an advisory panel of national collectors, supervised staff and contractors, and contributed directly to multi-year institutional strategic plans. Whether leading an institution, shaping a collection, or partnering with foundations and private galleries, I bring scholarly depth, diplomatic sensibility, and a genuine commitment to making art accessible to broad audiences.
