About Steph Lunn

My academic background includes a BA in biological anthropology, MPH in epidemiology, and MS in Microbiology and Immunology. My thesis and expertise focuses on the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein—exploring how structural changes and mutations drive viral evolution. While I don’t hold a PhD, I’ve developed tremendous expertise in molecular microbiology and pathogen genomics through hands-on experience and a deep curiosity about the molecular world. My passion lies in applying molecular biology and microbiology perspectives, such as pathogen evolution, genomics, and sequencing data analysis, to traditional epidemiological methods. I believe integrating these approaches is key to advancing genomic surveillance, which is the future of disease intelligence.Currently, I serve as a Bioinformatician at WA DOH, where I focus on sequencing data analysis and interpretation for public health. My work includes developing bioinformatics pipelines, analyzing pathogen sequencing data, and creating visualizations to monitor pathogens and inform PH response.I am actively exploring machine learning and deep learning to explore and understand the evolutionary dynamics of pathogen sequencing data. My goal is to apply these methods to genomic epidemiology, leveraging AI-driven approaches to identify trends in pathogen evolution, detect emerging variants, and enhance genomic surveillance strategies.I’m passionate about teaching and mentoring future scientists. As an educator, I teach pathogen genomics, a variety of biology classes, and bioinformatics, helping students connect molecular data to real-world applications. I love making complex concepts accessible, from genome evolution to molecular epidemiology. With a background that spans anthropology, public health, molecular biology, bioinformatics, and now ML/DL applications in pathogen genomics, I bring an interdisciplinary perspective and a practical, problem-solving approach to every project. I enjoy building tools and pipelines for genomic analyses, and my experience makes me well-suited for roles in computational biology, genome science, bioinformatics engineering, and genomic epidemiology.Core Strengths- Bioinformatics & Computational Biology- Molecular Epidemiology & Genomic Surveillance - ML/DL for Genomics- Python, R, and Command-Line Bioinformatics- AWS Cloud Computing, Docker, GitHub, Nextstrain: Scalable sequencing data analysis- Education- Data Analysis & Visualization- Pathogen Evolution & Genomic Diversity
