ABOUT ALEKS STEMPOR

I am an experienced and enthusiastic computational biologist working as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Cambridge and actively participating in the Cambridge business network. I combine genetics, genomics, statistics, machine learning and data visualization to conduct a state of the art research. In my academic career, I investigate how histone modification and transcription factors influence expression - both in the regulation of coding genes (promoter and enhancer regions) and repression of repetitive elements (transposons) in heterochromatin. I also develop Bayesian machine learning methods to infer regulatory networks for drag targets in cancer immunotherapy using gene expression profiles as biomarkers and led a DNA phenotyping project for forensic research using deep learning.During my undergraduate (engineering), I participated in the Erasmus program at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) and worked for Dalicon BV - a bioinformatics start-up in the Netherlands. After graduating in Biotechnology (specialization in Bioinformatics) at the Silesian University of Technology I started a double Master’s degree with Canfield University in Biotechnology and Applied Bioinformatics. I joined GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) Research Campus in Stevenage to conduct research for my thesis:\"The role of microRNAs in Inflammation\". Then I joined professor’s Julie Ahringer laboratory at The Gurdon Institute, the University of Cambridge as a Bioinformatics Research Associate. During my time in Cambridge I completed PhD research and dissertation:\"Relationships between chromatin features and genome regulation\", co-authored high-impact publications, co-founded start-up companies and attended multiple business and entrepreneurship events and courses including Ignite programme and for Venture Creation Weekends at Cambridge Judge Business School.I love mountains – hiking in the summer and skiing in the winter, and scuba diving – I am a certified PADI Advanced Open Water Diver.
